Cordless strimmers have undergone significant advancements, making them ideal for most small to medium-sized gardens. The advancements can be seen in the strimmer’s improved battery life, adjustability and lightweight constructions.

As with most battery-powered tools, the batteries used with cordless strimmers are also interchangeable with other cordless power tools. Therefore, if you already own or plan on purchasing another cordless tool, you may only need the bare tool and a single battery that you can use between the multiple matching branded tools.

To assist you in selecting a cordless strimmer, our handpicked selection lists top-performing models, chosen based on our first-hand experience using multiple strimmers to cut grass, weeds and other garden debris. Our testing and up-to-date research further ensure the quality of our recommendations.

How The DIY Works Team Tests & Rates Cordless Strimmers

From trimming grass around trees, walls and driveways to precision edging, strimmers are an essential tool for perfecting your garden. Cordless strimmers in particular are the most popular type to use and over the years, we’ve had the pleasure of testing multiple from top brands in the UK. During our testing, we analysed the cordless strimmer’s battery performance, cutting performance, safety features, ergonomics, build quality and ease of use.

As you can see in the images below, we’ve tested cordless strimmers from a variety of brands and a common trait of each is that they’ve all improved massively over the years when compared to their predecessors.

However, determining which is the best comes down to several factors and of course your budget. Another aspect that may sway your buying decision is if you already have a battery from the same branded power tool. This is important because the battery is often the most expensive part of a cordless strimmer and if you only need to purchase the bare tool, it’ll be much cheaper overall.

Below is a video that we posted on our YouTube channel that shows us testing our top recommendation (WORX WG163E Strimmer). As you can see in the video, we were able to easily trim grass with one hand and this is just one example of just how lightweight and easy cordless strimmers have become over the years.

As well as our testing and experience using multiple cordless strimmers, we also based our recommendations on the latest research and several factors. Some of the factors that we took into consideration included the strimmer’s battery performance, build quality, ease of use, ergonomics, cutting performance, safety features, additional functionality, warranty and value for money.

The Best Cordless Strimmers

At DIY Works, our content is 100% independent and we would never recommend a product that we wouldn't use ourselves (read our editorial standards and how we test products).

1. Best Overall: WORX WG163E Cordless Grass Trimmer

(How We Review →)

WORX is a brand that specialises in battery-powered tools and by far one of their most rated is their cordless strimmer known as the W163E. Desirable features that make it stand out from the crowd include the fact that it’s a 2-in-1 machine that converts from a grass trimmer to a wheeled edger. Other intuitive features include an instant line feed as well as plenty of adjustability with regards to the handle, pole length and the trimmer’s head.

As well as the fact that it’s packed full of intuitive features, the W163E model is also very lightweight. Weighing just 2.4KG, it allows for improved manoeuvrability and during our testing, we were able to use it with just one hand.

Pros
  • Easily converts from a strimmer to an in-line wheeled edger
  • Head, pole and handle easily adjusts to best suit your requirements
  • Features a flower guard for protection and assistance when edging
  • Desirable command feed that's reliable, quick and easy to use
  • Lightweight design (2.4 KG)
  • Battery lasts up to 30 minutes (from our testing) and charges quickly ready to be used again
  • Offers great value for the money
Cons
  • Not suitable for heavy duty strimming (such as nettles and other large vegetation)

To conclude, the WORX W163E ticks all the boxes and it features everything you would ever need in a cordless strimmer. For most small to medium-sized gardens, you’ll have no problem whatsoever trimming grass and weeds and perfecting the edges of your lawn. We’ve tested this particular cordless strimmer over the past few months and it certainly exceeded our expectations when compared to others we’ve tested. The only slight drawback is that it’s not suitable for heavy-duty applications but for the majority of people, this won’t be an issue.

2. Best All-Rounder: Greenworks G40LTK2 Cordless Strimmer

(How We Review →)

At DIY Works, we are big fans of the Greenworks cordless tools with the likes of their pole hedge trimmer being one of our favourites. However, there is a host of other highly rated power tools they have to offer and their cordless strimmer is a great example. Known as the G40LTK2 model, it’s a well-made strimmer that’s lightweight and uses the brand’s new and improved lithium 40V batteries for excellent performance.

Weighing just 2.8KG and featuring a height adjustable handle and variable speed trigger, the Greenworks G40LTK2 is very easy to use and the upgraded battery provides plenty of life (up to 40 minutes) for all your trimming requirements.

Pros
  • Desirable auto line feed for fast and efficient cutting
  • Comfortable and easy to use
  • Integrated plant guard that protects plants and tree bark
  • Weighs just 2.8KG
  • Backed by a manufacturers warranty (3 year tool and 2 year battery warranties)
  • Upgraded battery for improved performance
  • Aluminium shaft splits into two components for easier storage
Cons
  • Relatively expensive when compared to the alternatives
  • No edging facility

Overall, the Greenworks G40LTK2 is an excellent all-round cordless strimmer that’s well-made, easy to use and provides great cutting and battery performance. It isn’t the cheapest but it ticks all the boxes and is backed by a reputable brand with a dedicated UK support team and a lengthy warranty.

Choosing between the Greenworks and WORX machines is a difficult choice and the main aspect that lets this strimmer down is the fact that it’s slightly more expensive and it doesn’t have an edging facility. However, although you pay more for the machine, you have the benefit of a reputable brand backing and a better warranty for peace of mind.

3. Best Heavy Duty: DEWALT DCM561PBS XR Strimmer

(How We Review →)

If you require a heavy-duty cordless strimmer, look no further than the DEWALT DCM561PBS as it has been designed specifically for this purpose. As you would expect from the brand, the strimmer has been constructed to the highest of standards and for improved control whilst using the strimmer, it also features a 2-speed fully variable trigger.

Pros
  • High quality construction that can withstand the toughest of work environments
  • Desirable two speed control and variable speed trigger
  • Professional style guard that provides improved cut access and visibility
  • Trims grass fast with a large 33cm cutting width
  • Ergonomic handle for extended use
  • Compatible with larger capacity batteries
  • Backed by a 3 year manufacturers warranty (registration required)
Cons
  • Most expensive cordless strimmer within our roundup (doesn't come with a battery or charger)
  • Doesn't feature an edging facility

Although expensive, the DEWALT DCM561PBS is the best cordless strimmer for tackling long grass, weeds, brambles, nettles and any other “heavy-duty” strimming tasks. As with most of the brand’s other tools, it has been built to last and if you already own other DEWALT power tools, the batteries are interchangeable too.

During testing, we felt that it was the perfect replacement for a petrol strimmer as it’s durable and provides plenty of performance for all your strimming requirements. We also used a large DEWALT battery as this gave us additional battery life for extended use and we highly recommend that you do the same if you have a large garden.

4. Best With Blades: Gtech Cordless Grass Trimmer GT50

(How We Review →)

If you would prefer to use a cordless strimmer that features blades as opposed to a line, the Gtech GT50 is a great option to consider. Whether you need to trim grass or perfect the edges of your lawn, you’ll have no problem with the GT50 model and when it comes to changing the blades, they clip on and off with ease.

Another stand out feature of the GT50 model is that it’s also one of the lightest cordless strimmers on the market as it only weighs an impressive 1.85 KG.

Pros
  • Built to a high standard by a reputable UK brand
  • Comes as a complete kit with a battery, charger and 20 blades
  • Blades are easy to change and they are readily available from the brand at an affordable price
  • Desirable safety switch that avoids unexpected starts of the machine
  • Ergonomic handle that adjusts to best suit your requirements
Cons
  • Although it can be used for edging, there is no dedicated guide that help you achieve a neat finish

Although there are plenty of strimmers that use blades, the Gtech GT50 is one of the best. During testing, we especially liked how easy the blades were to change and although they are plastic, we found them to be very durable. To conclude, if you want an affordable yet high-quality cordless strimmer that’s lightweight and uses blades, the Gtech GT50 is the perfect solution.

5. Best Value: BLACK+DECKER STC1820PC String Grass Trimmer

(How We Review →)

One of the most popular cordless strimmers on the market is the BLACK+DECKER STC1820PC and for good reason too. It’s the brand’s new and improved model that features its patented E-Drive technology for improved power and speed. It’s also packed full of intuitive features such as an automatic feed system as well as a “Trim’n’Edge” function for perfecting your lawn’s edges. It really is the full package and its popularity is mainly due to its affordability.

Pros
  • Packs plenty of power and speed (5,500 to 7400 RPM line cutting speed)
  • Easy to use with adjustable handles to best suit your requirements
  • Offers great value (comes with a battery, charger and 9 metre of trimming line)
  • Well-made and produced by a reputable brand
  • Desirable automatic feed system
  • Easily switches between trimming and edging modes by twisting the pole
Cons
  • Battery performance could be improved as we found it lasted approximately 30 minutes but the main issue is that it takes far too long to charge (approximately 5 to 6 hours)

Overall, the BLACK+DECKER STC1820PC is packed full of features and apart from a slight setback with the battery, it really does tick all the boxes. Although it’s not the cheapest machine, when you consider all of its functionality, it’s the best value cordless strimmer on the market. As long as you are only trimming small to medium-sized lawns and you provide plenty of time for the battery to charge, it certainly won’t disappoint.

6. Best Budget: Einhell GC-CT Grass Strimmer

(How We Review →)

One of the cheapest cordless strimmers on the market that’s backed by a reputable brand and comes with a battery and charger is the Einhell GC-CT. Although it’s a budget cordless strimmer, it’s an excellent low-cost machine that enables you to easily tackle general weed and grass cutting. It’s also built to a relatively high standard with the likes of an aluminium telescopic handle and hardened plastic components.

Pros
  • Lightweight (1.8KG) and easy to use
  • Supplied with a battery, charger and 20 plastic blades
  • Battery can be used with all Einhell power tools
  • Features a desirable flower guard to protect flowers and other plants
  • Adjustable telescopic handle enables you to find a position that best suits your requirements
  • Easy to assemble out of the box
  • During testing, we found the battery life quite good (we managed approximately 30 minutes before needing to recharge the battery)
Cons
  • Not suitable for heavy duty strimming
  • Small cutting width of just 24cm
  • Doesn't feature a safety switch

To conclude, the Einhell GC-CT is a budget-friendly cordless strimmer that offers far better quality when compared to other non-branded alternatives. Its popularity is a clear indication of its quality and the fact that it’s backed by a reputable brand should provide you with confidence in the machine. As long as you are only planning to trim weeds and grass, there isn’t much to dislike and it’s by far the best budget cordless strimmer in the UK.

Conclusion

Cordless strimmers used to have a bad reputation for their performance but the latest have certainly changed that perception. All of our recommendations are suitable for all budgets and are ideal for small to medium-sized gardens. If you have a larger garden, you can always purchase multiple batteries if required. Alternatively, a petrol-powered strimmer would be the best option because you won’t be limited by the cordless strimmer’s battery life.
