How The DIY Works Team Tests & Rates Grass Seeds

As we own a number of properties (Airbnb’s and rentals) as well as our personal home, we’ve had the chance to test out several grass seed blends.

From creating a new lawn to overseeding, we’ve experimented with a range of grass seeds to provide our first-hand experience for this article. During our ongoing testing, we analyse the blend’s mixture, speed of growth, ease of application, coverage and its ability to grow under certain scenarios (i.e. shaded areas or clay coil).

Below are some photos we took whilst testing various grass seed blends over the years.

The above example shows us testing grass seed on patches that we had around the garden. As rated as one of the best for patch repairs, the Miracle-Gro Patch Magic did a great job and we highly recommend it.

To give you an idea of how easy it is to sow grass seed, below is a video that we posted onto our YouTube channel that we took whilst testing the Pronto Speedy Seed.

From the above application (in the video), below are the results of our testing. The second photo shows germination after 4 days, which we were really happy with. The third photo was taken after 10 days, and by the two-week stage, we had grass (although slightly patchy) that was several centimetres tall (as shown in the 4th photo).

To keep up our commitment to reviewing and testing the latest grass seed blends (for this article), we are continually testing out the latest grass seeds from top brands in the UK. This means that when we notice a brand has released a new and improved blend of grass seed, we will attempt to buy it and put it to the test where applicable.

As well as our testing and experience using multiple grass seed blends, we also based our recommendations on the latest research and several factors. Some of the factors that we considered included the blend’s contents, coverage, growth rate/germination, durability, the inclusion of an applicator, box sizes and value.

At DIY Works, our content is 100% independent and we would never recommend a product that we wouldn't use ourselves (read our editorial standards and how we test products).

1. Best Overall: Miracle-Gro EverGreen Multi-Purpose

(How We Review →)

Miracle-Gro are one of the most highly rated brand’s in the UK gardening industry and they produce a variety of grass seeds. However, their Evergreen Multi-Purpose blend is their best and it’s suitable for overseeding and new lawns.

According to the brand, this particular blend of grass seed has recently been improved and now offers up to 50% faster germination than previous Multi-Purpose mixtures.

Pros
  • Covers up to 14m2
  • Child and pet friendly
  • During testing, we saw results within a week
  • Available in other box sizes (7, 14, 28 or 56m2)
  • Supplied with a sprinkler in the box
  • The blend includes ryegrass for added durability
  • Coated in a bird repellent coating
Cons
  • Relatively expensive when compared to other grass seeds

To conclude, the Miracle-Gro Multi-Purpose is the best grass seed on the market that provides fast growth, affordability and is ideal for both overseeding or new lawns. It truly is a versatile blend and does exactly what it says on the box. From testing the previous Multi-Purpose seed, the new and improved blend is definitely a big improvement.

2. Best Fast-Growing: Pronto Speedy Seed

(How We Review →)

By far one of the most popular grass seeds available in the UK is Pronto’s Speedy Seed, which as the name suggests is a fast-growing blend. According to the brand, it promises results in 7 to 14 days and as you’ll see in our “How We Rated” section below, we achieved great results whilst testing this particular blend of grass seed.

Pronto are so confident of their grass seed, they promise to help you until you get the results that you want. This is quite impressive but as long as your preparation is done correctly, you probably won’t have an issue with this seed.

Pros
  • Fast-growing with results in just 7 to 14 days (proven in our testing)
  • DEFRA approved
  • Large coverage and big boxes of seeds available
  • Offers great value for money
  • Expiry within 2 to 3 years (exact date stamped on the box)
  • Suitable for new lawns, patches or overseeding
Cons
  • No applicator on the box (during testing, we used our hands to sow the seed)

If you need grass to germinate and grow several centimetres in such a small space of time, you can’t go wrong with the Pronto Speedy Seed. We’ve used it multiple times and it never disappoints with results in less than a week if the weather conditions are perfect. Compared to other grass seeds, it also offers great value for the money too.

3. Best Value: GBW Grass Seed

(How We Review →)

By far the most popular grass seed available in the UK is the GBW Blend, which comes in a 1KG bag. The brand are so confident of this lawn seed mixture that they even offer a 100% guarantee for complete peace of mind.

4. Best Hard-Wearing: A1 Lawn Pro 25

(How We Review →)

For busy gardens with heavy foot traffic, a hard-wearing grass seed is advised and the A1 Lawn Pro 25 is a dedicated blend designed specifically for durability. Unlike other grass seeds offered by the brand, this blend has added perennial ryegrass that’s more hardy and tougher than other ryegrass blends.

  • Freshly harvested in the UK
  • Fast-growing with results expected within 7 to 21 days
  • UK based brand that offers direct support

  • Can be used to create new lawns, overseeding, thickening and patch repair
Cons
  • No small bag sizes available for patch repairs or small lawns

If you require a hard-wearing grass seed that promises results, look no further than A1 Lawn’s PRO 25 blend. It’s specially designed to be very hard-wearing and it’s also very versatile as it can be used to create new lawns, overseeding, thickening and patch repairs. Considering the large bag sizes that start at 5KG, it also offers great value for the money too.

5. Best For Patches: Miracle-Gro Patch Magic

(How We Review →)

Another popular grass seed by the reputable Miracle-Gro brand is their Patch Magic blend. It’s designed to grow anywhere and also be a one-step solution to repair any patches that have formed on your lawn.

Unlike the brand’s Multi-Purpose blend, the Patch Magic grass seeds contain coir, which absorbs up to six times its weight in the water surrounding the seed in a protective layer.

Pros
  • Available in 1.2, 1.5 or 3.5 KG bags
  • Guaranteed to grow anywhere
  • Dedicated blend that's designed to repair patches in your lawn
  • During testing, we found that it began to germinate in as little as 4 days
Cons
  • Most expensive grass seed per 1KG

Although expensive, the Micracle-Gro Patch Magic is the best grass seed for lawn repair or patches. The advanced blend is worth paying the extra for and you even see results in just 4 days, which is very impressive.

6. Most Versatile: Gro-Sure Smart Grass Lawn Seed

(How We Review →)

Gro-Sure is another highly reputable brand in the UK that offers a range of grass seeds and their Smart blend is by far their most popular. Each of the seeds has been coated with aqua gel, which is a technology the brand states provides guaranteed success. Whether you need grass to grow in worn areas, patches, shade or full sun, it’s a versatile blend.

Pros
  • Designed to slowly release moisture to the seed
  • Supplied with a built-in applicator
  • Fast growing results
  • Clever aqua gel technology on each of the seeds
  • Available in larger boxes (40, 80 or 250m2)
Cons
  • Relatively expensive when compared to the alternatives

To conclude, the Gro-Sure Smart blend is a highly rated grass seed that promises results regardless of the area it’s planted. The addition of the aqua gel coating aids germination of the seeds and it’s worth paying the premium for if previous grass seeds have failed. During testing, we found that it successfully germinated in both shade and full sun and we would highly recommend this blend if you’ve failed with other grass seeds.

Conclusion

There are hundreds of grass seed blends available but it’s vital that you choose a blend that’s designed for the UK. Unlike other countries around the world, we aren’t that lucky to have gorgeous weather all year round.

For the best possible chance of growing grass successfully, you’ll want to plant them at the right time, which is usually from March to September. You should also prepare the ground by keeping it moist and removing any weeds.
