How The DIY Works Team Tests & Rates Home Alarm Systems

As we own a number of properties (rentals and Airbnb’s), we’ve needed to install several alarm systems over the years. Luckily, due to the improvement in smart technology, most home alarm systems have become far easier to install and set up, which has meant we’ve been able to install them ourselves. This is because the majority of home alarm systems come as complete DIY kits that can also be expanded at a later date if required.

To keep up our commitment to reviewing and testing the latest home alarm systems (for this article), we are continually testing the latest offerings from top brands in the UK. This means that when we notice that a brand has released a new kit, we attempt to upgrade our current systems for testing (where applicable).

During our ongoing testing, we analyse the alarm system’s build quality, usability, ease of installation, functionality, expandability and siren output.

As you can see in the photos below, we recently installed the Yale and Ring DIY home alarm systems and the photos show what’s included in the box.

As well as our testing and experience of using multiple home alarm systems, we also based our recommendations on the latest research and several factors. Some of the factors that we took into consideration included the system’s build quality, ease of installation, usability, functionality, smart features, expandability, siren output, additional accessories supplied within the kit, warranty and value for money.

1. Best Smart: Yale IA-340 Sync Smart Home Alarm

(How We Review →)

Yale is a highly reputable brand in the UK and they are well-known for their superior quality. Their LA-320 setup in particular is their new and improved home alarm system that’s available in multiple kits to best suit your requirements.

As it’s a smart alarm system, it has the desirable feature of being able to use voice commands via Amazon Alexa. This means that you can arm the alarm by using the specified voice commands, which are listed within the instructions.

Pros
  • Full control of the alarm via the Yale Home App (we found it very easy to use during testing)
  • Compatible with Alexa and Google Voice Assistant
  • 200 metre wireless range
  • Internal 96 dB siren and 104 dB bell box
  • Compatible with Philips Hue bulbs for light flashes
  • Rated as Energy Class A+
  • Easy to setup and no monitoring fees
  • During testing, the complete kit supplied in the box was easy to setup and the instructions were very clear
Cons
  • Relatively expensive when compared to the alternatives

To conclude, the Yale LA-320 is the perfect DIY home alarm system that’s easy to setup and can be expanded at a later date. The Yale App is also very easy to use and is updated on a regular basis by the brand with additional features.

2. Best DIY: Ring Smart Home Alarm System

(How We Review →)

Ring is well-known for its wireless video doorbells but they also produce a range of other security systems. For example, this home alarm system by the brand follows their great reputation and it’s available as 5, 7, 9 or 10-piece kits. However, regardless of the kit you choose, each can be expanded at a later date if required.

According to the brand, you can set up this alarm system yourself in a matter of minutes without any tools.

Pros
  • Easy to setup and it's able to work alongside existing Ring products
  • Compatible with the Amazon Alexa for voice commands
  • Outputs a 104 dB siren at 30 cm
  • Includes a 1 year warranty
  • Fast and simple wireless installation
  • Optional 3G backup connection available
Cons
  • Lacks key fobs, which may be a requirement for some users

The Ring Alarm is a complete DIY system that can be installed with ease and upgraded at a later date with additional components. Once set up, it connects with the free Ring application, which allows you to further configure the system.

During testing, we felt that it was a high-quality kit that comes with everything you require in the box. It also benefits from being slightly cheaper than the Yale alternative, which is another great bonus.

3. Best Value: Eufy Security Home Alarm Kit

(How We Review →)

If you require a more affordable option that’s still developed by a reputable brand, the Eufy home alarm system is the perfect solution. It’s a true DIY installation that takes minutes to set up out of the box and it includes no monthly fees. It also uses the brand’s dedicated smartphone application that’s easy to use and allows for plenty of customisation.

Pros
  • Everything included in the box to install the system
  • Takes just minutes to setup and install
  • Instant alerts via the brand's smartphone app
  • Arm and disarm the system via the keyring or smartphone app
Cons
  • During testing, we found that the alarm siren wasn't very loud

Overall, the Eufy home alarm system is an excellent all-round option that really does tick all the boxes. It’s developed by a reputable brand, easy to use and set up and it also offers great value for the money too.

4. Best All-Rounder: SimpliSafe Home Security System

(How We Review →)

SimpliSafe is a brand that’s well-known for their home alarm systems and this particular setup is one of the best systems they have to offer. It’s an expandable wireless home alarm system that requires a simple DIY installation that the brand states will take as little as 1 hour. The brand also offers a professional monitoring service with this home alarm system but this does come with a monthly subscription (choice of two plans).

Pros
  • Expandable up to 100 components
  • Pet friendly as it detects the heat signals of humans and not cats or dogs
  • 4G data backup and a 24 hour battery backup
  • No drilling or wiring required for the installation
  • Works with Amazon Alexa & Google Assistant
  • User friendly smartphone application for controlling the system
Cons
  • Relatively expensive when compared to the alternatives
  • Paid subscriptions are required to access some of the best features

The SimpliSafe home alarm system is a great option to consider if you are looking for a mid-range setup for your home. There is a selection of setups that you can choose from that include systems that only require 5 components to those with over 20. Therefore, this means that you’ll be able to fine-tune the system to best suit your requirements.

5. Best Budget: YISEELE Wireless Home Alarm System

(How We Review →)

By far one of the cheapest wireless home alarm systems available in the UK is by the YISSLE brand. When compared to similarly priced systems, it offers far better quality and it comes with its very own smartphone application for controlling the alarm. It’s also expandable and according to the brand, it can support up to 100 sensors and 10 remotes.

Pros
  • WiFi based system with a dedicated smartphone app
  • Easy to install and setup
  • Hub has an integrated battery that can last up to 6 hours (useful in power outages)
  • Easily expandable to suit any home requirements
  • Backed by a 2 year warranty for peace of mind
Cons
  • Not as high quality when compared to the alternatives
  • We felt that the alarm could be slightly louder

To conclude, if you want an affordable and easy to set up home alarm system, you can’t go wrong with the YISSEL alarm. Although there are some cheaper systems on the market, none come close to the YISSEL alarm’s quality and ease of use and it certainly won’t disappoint.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, burglary is a growing trend and it’ll always be something you need to protect against. Luckily, the latest wireless systems are far easier to use, cheaper and offer greater protection when compared to older alarms. There has never been a better time to buy one and they can even be installed yourself in a matter of minutes as most come as a DIY kit.
