How The DIY Works Team Tests & Rates Smart Locks

At DIY Works, we love the latest technology and smart locks are a device that we’ve installed in our home, office as well as other properties we own such as our Airbnb’s.

As you can see in the photo, we’ve installed the Nuki Smart Lock to the DIY Works office door and it’s a really high-quality bit of kit that’s packed full of intuitive features. Compared to other locks, it also looks fantastic too.

However, as shown in the photos below, we’ve also tried and tested other smart locks. During our testing, we analysed the lock’s build quality, ease of installation and all the smart features and functionality that it has to offer.

Below are some photos we took during the testing and unboxing of the new and improved Nuki 3.0 Pro. As you can see, the lock barrel itself is very heavy duty but the lock that’s actually visible is very aesthetically pleasing.

Another smart lock that we had the pleasure of installing was the Yale Conexis L1 and it’s a great option to consider for UPVC doors. As shown in the photos below, it came with everything needed to install it out of the box and it looks great (both internally and externally) when installed to the UPVC door.

To keep up our commitment to reviewing and testing the latest smart locks (for this article), we are continually testing out the latest offerings from top brands. Therefore, you may see many more smart lock installations on our social media profiles.

As well as our testing and experience of using multiple smart locks, we also based our recommendations on the latest research and a number of factors. Some of the factors that we considered included accessibility, ease of installation and operation, build quality, certifications, compatibility with doors, styles available, warranty and value for money.

The Best Smart Locks

At DIY Works, our content is 100% independent and we would never recommend a product that we wouldn't use ourselves (read our editorial standards and how we test products).

1. Best Overall: Nuki 3.0 Pro Smart Door Lock

(How We Review →)

Nuki is a brand that has been producing premium smart door locks for many years now and they have recently released the 3.0 Pro model. It’s the brand’s new and improved smart lock that’s packed full of functionality.

Although the brand also released the 3.0 model at the same time, the 3.0 Pro features remote access, which is made possible via the integrated WiFi module. This makes it a real game-changer and stands out from other smart locks.

Pros
  • Intuitive remote access that can be used at distance
  • It has the ability to automatically open and close with your smartphone in your pocket
  • Integrates with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa and Google Home.
  • Very easy to install and during our testing of this lock, we installed in just a few minutes
  • Guaranteed security by the brand
  • High quality look and feel
  • Compatible with most smart devices
  • Available as a Euro or UK cylinder
Cons
  • Most expensive smart lock within our roundup

Although expensive, the Nuki 3.0 Pro is the ultimate smart lock and the new WiFi module opens it up to plenty more functionality. During our testing (as displayed below our roundup), it was very easy to install and the locking and smartphone functionality worked perfectly. However, it’s worth pointing out that if the ability to remotely control the lock isn’t something you require, the 3.0 model has many of the same qualities but at a much more affordable price.

2. Best For UPVC Door: Yale Conexis L1

(How We Review →)

Yale is a highly reputable brand and they are well known for their security products. Their smart door lock in particular is a great example of what they offer and it’s simple to fit and compatible with most UPVC and composite doors.

Unlike other smart door locks on the market, the Conexis L1 is far more aesthetically pleasing to look at and it’s available in multiple styles that include chrome, black, polished brass, satin nickel and white.

Pros
  • British Standards Institute (BSI) approved
  • Choice of 5 finishes
  • Battery powered (4 x AA batteries)
  • Only requires a screwdriver for installation
  • Compatible with UPVC and composite doors
  • Unlock via key tag, mobile phone, phone tag or key card
  • Full in-app control for further functionality
Cons
  • May require fine tuning to ensure its fully functioning

To conclude, the Yale Conexis L1 is an excellent all-round option that’s available in a choice of styles to best suit your requirements and home décor. The fact that it’s the only smart door lock in the UK that’s BSI approved also provides you with complete peace of mind that it’s fully secure and tested too. During our testing of this smart lock, we found it relatively to install with just a screwdriver and it looked great on a UPVC door (as shown below in our testing section).

3. Best Fingerprint: SwitchBot Wi-Fi Smart Lock

(How We Review →)

By far the most popular smart lock with fingerprint entry is the SwitchBot and although expensive, it offers a lot of intuitive functionality. From remote access to automatic locking, it’s the complete package.

In terms of compatibility, the brand state that it’s suitable for euro profile, UK oval, Swiss round and knob cylinders. When it comes to the installation, no tools whatsoever are required because it uses a 3M adhesive strip.

Pros
  • Reversible handle for left or right handed doors
  • IP65 rated for indoor or outdoor installation
  • 18 month electrical warranty and lifetime mechanical warranty
  • Available in four different styles
  • Intuitive OLED display
  • Long battery life with low battery alarm
  • Solid one-piece zinc alloy body
Cons
  • Currently it doesn't integrate with HomeKit
  • Relatively expensive when compared to the alternatives

Overall, the SwitchBot WiFi is a premium smart lock that offers everything you need and more. If you require fingerprint entry, it’s certainly the best smart lock on the market that offers that functionality. However, when compared to the Nuki, we feel that it isn’t as aesthetically pleasing and it also lacks the Apple HomeKit integration too.

4. Easiest To Install: WE.LOCK SECB Electronic Door Lock

(How We Review →)

The WE.LOCK SECB is an intuitive smart lock that can be unlocked via the brand’s smartphone app, fingerprint or a remote tag. According to the brand, it’s easy to install and compatible with 99% of doors in UK homes.

Pros
  • Quick and easy 3 minute DIY installation
  • Adjustable lock cylinder
  • Featured packed app with unlock record
  • Low battery alarm siren
  • Supports up to 459 fingerprints
  • IP44 weatherproof rated
Cons
  • Not the most aesthetically pleasing

Overall, the WE.LOCK SECB is an easy to install smart door lock that’s built to a high standard and packed full of functionality. It does lack some stylish features but as an all-round lock, it does the job brilliantly.

5. Best Budget: Yale Smart Living Keyless Door Lock

(How We Review →)

Another smart lock by the Yale brand that’s also one of the cheapest in the UK is the Smart Living model. Although it’s a low cost option, the lock offers multiple access methods such as a pin code, key card/tag, remote fob and smartphone app. However, it’s important to note that the Smart Living lock is only suitable for wooden doors with a 60 mm night latch.

Pros
  • Available in chrome, polished brass or satin nickel
  • Multiple forms of keyless access
  • Supports Amazon Alexa voice commands
  • Illuminated keypad for improved usability
  • Tamper alert via an internal alarm
Cons
  • Not suitable for PVC doors

For those that want a keyless smart lock for their wooden doors, the Yale Smart Living model is a great option to consider. It’s an affordable yet high quality door lock that’s backed by the reputable Yale brand for peace of mind.

Conclusion

Although there isn’t much wrong with a good old-fashioned key, installing a smart door lock adds far more functionality. It also improves accessibility as well as security and they can be installed relatively easily with basic tools.

All of the recommendations above cover the best on the market and they are suitable for all budgets. However, to avoid disappointment, we strongly advise that you purchase from a reputable brand and try their smartphone app beforehand.
