Rather than storing a spare key under a plant pot or mat, the best and most secure option is to use a key safe. They are designed for properties that need to be accessed by a range of visitors such as a holiday, Airbnb or rental property to care workers checking in on the elderly.

Depending on your requirements, you may require a key safe that’s police approved. If that’s the case, there are limited, premium options available but if you do invest, you’ll have complete peace of mind that it has been fully tested with proven results.

As you can see in the image above, we installed the Supra C500 to one of our properties and we would highly recommend it. However, we have also used a range of other key safes (electronic and mechanical) over the years to base our recommendations on.

Our hand-picked selection of key safes features top-performing models chosen through our first-hand experience with mechanical and electronic safes, testing and thorough research.

How The DIY Works Team Tests & Rates The Key Safes

As we own multiple Airbnbs and holiday lets, key safes have been essential for us and they are found on many of our properties. This has meant that we’ve had the pleasure of testing a whole range of key safes over the years to best suit the property.

With regards to the installation, most are relatively easy to install but if you want to gauge an idea of how it’s done, we created a detailed key safe installation guide that walks you through the process (we install the SUPRA C500).

During our on going testing of key safes, we analyse their build quality, installation difficulty, internal size, ease of use, design and any additional features.

Below are some photos we took of a recent key safe that we installed and tested. As you can see in the photos, it has a weatherproof cover that easily flips down to reveal the lock. After entering the required digits to access it, you can then turn the dial to unlock the key safe and gain access to the keys inside.

This particular lock has a police-approved design and is also relatively easy to use too, which is the reason why we highly recommend it within our roundup. In terms of why we installed it, the keys inside are used to gain access to our Airbnb property but it can be used for so many other applications.

If you would like to see a video of how a key safe works, below is a video that we posted on our YouTube channel that shows us testing our top recommendation (SUPRA C500). As you can see in the video, the design is very sturdy and it’s very easy to use to gain access to the keys.

To keep up our commitment to reviewing and testing the latest key safes (for this article), we are continually testing the latest offerings from top brands in the UK. This means that when we notice a brand has released a new and improved key safe, we will attempt to buy it and put it to the test (where applicable).

As well as our testing and experience of using multiple key safes, we also based our recommendations on the latest research and several factors. The factors that we took into consideration included the lock type, size, ease of installation, police approval, warranty and value. These will all need to be considered if you are in the market for a key safe.

1. Best Overall: Supra C500 Police Approved Key Safe

(How We Review →)

The Supra C500 is a heavy-duty key safe that’s police approved and constructed of a heavy gauge, stainless steel and zinc alloy shell. It does come with a premium price but when you consider the superior build quality, it’s clear to see why.

To ensure maximum security of this key safe, it has undergone rigorous testing by the LPCB security experts in the UK. The accreditation achieved means that it’s recognised by the Secured By Design’s police preferred specifications and many home insurance companies in the UK.

Pros
  • Designed to be wall mounted outside your house
  • Police approved key safe
  • Weatherproof rubber cover
  • Over 4,000 key code combinations
  • Clutch mechanism prevents the handle being forced up
  • Easy to install and supplied with 4 x masonry screws included
  • During testing, we were really impressed with its quality (its weight is a clear sign of just how well it's built)
Cons
  • Relatively expensive when compared to other key safes

Although expensive, the Supra C500 is the ultimate police-approved key safe that won’t disappoint. The heavy-duty double wall construction can withstand hours of brute force attacks and it’s relatively easy to install onto the wall.

2. Best Smart: Master Lock Bluetooth Key Safe

(How We Review →)

By far the most expensive outdoor key safe is the Bluetooth model by the Master Lock brand. They produce several key safes but this is their flagship model that can be unlocked via a smartphone app or pin code combination.

From the smartphone application (available for iOS and Android), you can share guest access, view activity or tamper alerts and so much more.

Pros
  • Supplied with all the mounting hardware
  • No activation or monthly costs
  • Suitable for indoor or outdoor installations
  • Aesthetically pleasing illuminated appearance
  • We found the smartphone application easy to use
Cons
  • Most expensive key safe within our roundup
  • Need to remember to change the batteries (powered by a CR123A battery)

Being able to simply unlock the key safe using your phone is highly desirable and it’s what makes this particular model stand out from the crowd. However, if this is a feature that you will rarely use, the alternatives will be a more cost-effective solution to securing your keys.

3. Best All-Rounder: Sentinel Wall Mounted Key Safe

(How We Review →)

The Sentinel Push Button key safe is a hard-wearing wall-mounted option that’s designed for outdoor use. Compared to similarly priced alternatives, it’s made from aluminium and steel that’s then coated with weatherproof paint. This means that it should retain its original look and feel for many years without rusting like many of the cheaper alternatives.

In terms of accessing the key safe, there are up to 10,000 different combinations to choose from and it can be easily reset in a matter of minutes.

Pros
  • Robust aluminium and steel construction
  • Coated in a weather resistant paint
  • Heavy duty push buttons
  • Includes a 12 month guarantee
Cons
  • Very basic design and functionality

Overall, the Sentinel key safe is one of the cheapest push-button options that’s built to last. It’s fairly basic in terms of design but this is what makes it easy to use.

4. Best Budget: Master Lock Outdoor Key Safe

(How We Review →)

By far the most popular key safe in the UK is another option from the Master Lock brand and it’s perfect for those on a budget. However, unlike cheaper alternatives, this particular model is constructed of an aluminium shell to protect it against the elements. It also has an easy-to-use 4-digit combination for locking and unlocking the key safe.

Pros
  • Suitable for indoor and outdoor usage
  • Available in silver or white
  • Resettable 4 digit pin code combination
  • Easy to install with mounting accessories included
  • Includes a limited lifetime warranty
Cons
  • Quite small, which can make it fiddly getting the keys out

To conclude, the Master Lock outdoor key safe is an excellent all-round option that’s backed by a limited lifetime warranty. Considering its affordability, the long warranty provides you with complete peace of mind that it’s built to last.

Master Lock also offers a portable option that doesn’t require a wall-mounted installation and this may be desirable for some that don’t want the hassle of installing a key safe.

5. Best Large: NRS Healthcare Big Key Safe

(How We Review →)

The NRS Healthcare key safe offers a larger internal capacity to hold bigger keys such as those produced by the Yale brand. The design also accommodates larger push buttons, which is a desirable feature that makes it easier to use.

To remain discrete, it has an intuitive neoprene weatherproof cover that’s disguised as an electricity hub, which helps to not raise any suspicions.

Pros
  • Constructed of heavy duty zinc alloy
  • Larger internal capacity and larger buttons
  • Supplied with all the mounting accessories
  • Disguised and weatherproof cover
  • Automatically resets to prevent leaving it unlocked
Cons
  • Relatively expensive when compared to the alternatives

If you require a slightly larger key safe that’s heavy-duty and easy to use, the NRS Healthcare unit is the best option. It’s more expensive than many of the alternatives but it’s a worthwhile investment that won’t disappoint.

6. Best Budget Runner-Up: LDS Security Key Storage Box

(How We Review →)

The LRS Key Storage Box is a combination security key storage box that’s affordable and stores up to 10 pairs of keys. It’s available in a silver or black coated finish that’s easy to install and comes with all the mounting fixings.

Pros
  • Combination lock with 4 digit pin code
  • Internal hook for hanging keys
  • Durable zinc alloy cylinder
  • Resists hammering and sawing
  • Easy to use and reset the pin code
Cons
  • Not big enough for large keys (i.e. bulky car keys)

Overall, the LRS Key Storage Box is a great all-rounder that’s cheap and durable. It also has the benefit of a choice of silver or black finishes, which gives you the choice of being highly visible or not.

Conclusion

Whether you own an Airbnb, rental or holiday property, a key safe is a great addition. They allow you to securely store keys and provide a means for others to gain access to the property without you actually being there. It’s as simple as providing a visitor with a pin code which they can then use to access the keys within the safe.

Although a regular home safe would be the most secure option, it’s virtually impossible to secure them to an external wall. Therefore, the key safe alternative is the best way to store keys as it’s much smaller and just as secure.

All of our recommendations within this article cover each type of lock and are suitable for all types of budgets. We strongly recommend the police-approved locks but if not, the alternatives offer great security and won’t disappoint.
